Ensure that you use the correct signs (+ or -) at all times. The usual format of a spectacle correction is: Sphere (sph) – This can be + or – and it is important that you select the right one. Cylinder (Cyl) – Again, this can be + or – but it is important to note that not every prescription will have a cylinder in which case it will appear blank on your prescription copy Axis – Every cylinder (if present) will have an axis. This value describes the angle at which a cylinder will be positioned in the frame. The value can be anywhere between 0 and 180. There are no plus or minus signs on an axis You will need to indicate what your spectacles are for if you have separate distance and reading prescriptions (usually people over 40 years of age). People under 40 usually have one prescription for use at all distances. If your prescription is made up of both a distance and reading prescription it will usually be written in the following format: Distance prescription followed by the reading addition (add). Here is a sample prescription for both right and left eyes. RE +2.00/-0.50 x 70 add +1.75 L +2.25/-1.00 x 90 add +1.75 The first number is the sphere (+2.00 in the case of the right eye); the second number is the cyl (-1.00 in the case of the left eye) and the third number is the axis (70 degrees in the case of the right eye) We work out the reading prescription by adding the distance sphere to the reading add (the cyl and axis remain the same). We will do this for you if this is the format in which your prescription is written. If you have been given a prescription for reading only, this calculation may already be done. Confused? Don’t be!!! You can always photograph and email the prescription to us and we will make sense of it and advise you on how to accurately provide the information.
